All Things Google

You may have noticed a big push for Google apps this year at KISD.  We love Google and all it has to offer our students and staff.  There are many ways that Google can help make your life easier.  I have highlighted a few of my favorites below.

Google Drive-  A lot of us do not realize the extent of the ways that we can utilize Google drive.  As teachers, we have 30 gigabytes of free storage space in the Google cloud.  We can store any type of file here-- videos, pictures, documents, presentations, PDFs...the possibilities are vast.  Google Drive automatically saves and your stuff will never go away unless you manually delete it.  In addition, you can create files within Google Drive including presentations, forms, spreadsheets, documents and drawings.  These files automatically save as soon as you start typing/making the file.  I am a big fan of Google Forms and use them frequently as you may have already noticed.  The other big bonus of Google Drive is that it allows its users to share files with others.  Google Drive is very user friendly.

Google Calendar-  I LOVE my Google calendar app.  Google allows you to create more than 1 calendar.  I have a work calendar for myself and a calendar for the KHS Library.  Since I have a smart phone, I can link these calendars to my phone and set reminders etc.  In addition, when you create events using the Google calendar you can add in as much detail as you want and invite other people to your events.  If they accept your invites, those events automatically go onto their Google calendar.  I have also embedded my calendar into the library website so that everyone can see it.

Google Sites-  Do you want to make a website but don't know how?  Try Google Sites.  It is EXTREMELY easy to use.  You are looking at a Google site right now.  And guess what?  All of your other Google apps will work seamlessly with your site.

Google Chrome Web Browser- Are you tired of getting plug in update notices and other annoying messages when you use Internet Explorer or Firefox?  I know I was and out of my frustration a Google Chrome user was born.  All of my other web based Google applications work wonderfully on Google Chrome.  There are many great features that make it even more user friendly like the App bar.  It takes a little getting used to but trust's worth it.

Easy Bib- Easy Bib is a free citation tool that is built into the More section of your Google account.  It helps students to cite their sources correctly using the latest MLA format.  It gives citation help for 59 different types of sources including interviews, webpages, music, pictures and more.  Students can build bibliographies that automatically save and are put in the correct order as more and more citations are added.  I LOVE Easy Bib and tell all of my students that come to the library for research help about it.

For more in depth information on some of these apps, you can visit the KISD Google help link here.  You can also get even more in-depth information on all things Google from the Digital Learning Series.  If you have any questions please contact me and I will be happy to help you in any way that I can.
